So wedding season is upon us and love is in the air! As the wedding invites start to arrive, it’s time to think about what to wear. For this particular wedding, it was a traditional somali evening and I borrowed my outfit from my Mama, who has amazing silk dresses. In Somali, the dresses are called dirac, and they come in a variety of different colours and prints.
This dress is the perfect choice for a wedding, it has a lovely classic maxi length shape but its bold print means you can work the dress for a variety of styles of wedding by accessorizing with different colours. I’ve pulled out the yellow in the dress by adding a white and yellow hijab, gold chain bag and cream slingbacks.
You could also wear a white cover up with white fascinator for a different look altogether. I’ve chosen a larger sized bag rather than a clutch as I have lots of wedding essentials I like to take including my camera to capture the day, tissues for the possible tears, and confetti for the photo op.
For makeup I’d definitely suggest a primer to keep your makeup in place. For daytime weddings, keep your makeup simple and light, and then add a quick coat of mascara and a spot of lippy for the evening. Hijab wise I think it’s worth carrying some extra hijab pins and an extra hijab to sort out any disasters – I always tend to get my hijab dirty at weddings from all the hugging and dancing. Oops, yes I am a full on child at events!

The night ended with an amazing somali music and phenomenal traditional dancers. It was the best Saturday ever.
