    What's in My Makeup Bag

ONE DAY I DECIDED THAT I AM BEAUTIFUL, AND SO I CARRIED OUT MY LIFE AS IF I AM A BEAUTIFUL GIRL. I WEAR COLOuRS THAT I REALLY LIKE, I WEAR MAKEUP THAT MAKES ME FEEL PRETTY, AND IT REALLY HELPS. IT DOESN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HOW THE WORLD PERCEIVES YOU. WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT YOU SEE.

Like most girls, I adore makeup. I like showering, moisturizing and putting on makeup as best as I can. It has taken me a full year to really find my way in terms of the makeup that works for me, what I can afford to buy and what I can’t justify – and I’ve learnt how important quality is when it comes to all these things we as women put on our face everyday. For most of my life, I’d buy my makeup at the supermarket or maybe whatever looked cute and on sale at Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart. But I’m getting there I think, investing in good but painfully expensive products when I can, watching Lisa Eldridge videos every so often. So remember, I am a novice at this – and while I might not know much, I do know that I love these products and like everything I write here, it comes from a place of personal recommendation. Just as my real life friends trawl through my makeup bag, I thought you might like to too. Each product mentioned is linked, just hover and click – if any of them catch your eye, that is!

    FOUNDATION:

My skin has gotten more sensitive with age, I used to be able to slap any old product on and it wouldn’t affect my pores and cause me to break out. However, I am now investing in base products that actually stay on my face longer than 2 hours. My favourites are Chanel Perfection Lumiere(not pictured here),  Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation and W3LL People Narcissist foundation– all three are light but still give good coverage.  I don’t usually get blemishes, so I prefer a lighter option, anything too heavy just weighs my face down and honestly, feels really uncomfortable on my skin. Before I apply foundation, I mist my face with Avene thermal water. Just four to six spritzes about 2-3 inches away from your face is ideal. As I deal with dry and flaky skin, it gives a boost of moisture and slip so the foundation can apply easier on my skin.

    MASCARA:

I am cursed with long, thin curly lashes and just generally sparse eyelashes. So really, I need all the help I can get when it comes to mascara,  the really crazy jet black, thick options are best for me. W3LL People Expressionist Mascara is magical – there is reason behind the hype. I will always have this in my makeup bag.  Thanking one of my best friends who handed me hers a few years ago when we were getting ready to go out on a Friday night. Ever since then, I have been hooked and it’s probably one of my favourite beauty products of all time. Second up are Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara. Dior mascaras are great too, and not clumpy at all – I usually like to layer my eyelashes in a different mascaras, so I’ll use both the W3LL People and Dior at the same time.

    BRONZER/BLUSH:

My skin tone varies drastically, for 6 months of the year I am pale and the other 6, I have a deep tan from the summer sun. So I use different products as the seasons change. However, I will always wear bronzer, my all year choice is Guerlain Bronzing Terracotta Bronzing Powder in 07 it looks worryingly shimmery in the compact, so much so I was convinced I would hate it. I don’t like glitter on my face! But it powders on so smoothly and the shimmer acts as a highlighter – such a lovely colour on top of my foundation. In terms of blush, I only just started experimenting, previously I thought blusher would make me look like I was really wearing blush. But after some enthusiasm on my friend’s behalf, I was coaxed into trying a few. So far, I really love Makeup Forever HD Blush in 510 Raspberry– a magical little cream blush that adds a natural looking plum colour to my cheeks – the same sort of natural healthy colour on dark skin tones I get when I finish a workout. I’ll only use this sparingly, as the colour is pretty intense. Last but certainty not least, I cannot stop raving about highlighters. I love Becca highlighters and the liquid form of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal is my all-time favourite in the summer. Liquid highlighters just sit well on my skin and the colour opal is a perfect highlighter for dark skin tones. During the winter, I prefer a powder highlight to complement a matte face and my current favourite is Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Light. This highlighter is perfect for woman that want their skin to glow but not in an obvious way.

    EYESHADOW/EYELINER:

When it comes to eye makeup, I have no favourites brands. My collection ranges from Tom Ford to Sonia Kashuk. For a busy woman, creamy eye colour sticks are my all time favourite and so I stay loyal to the brand By Terry, using the same products over and over. They include the Ombre Blackstar in Velvet Orchid,  Midnight Forest and in Brown Perfection, all of which are a pen version of traditional eyeshadow colours – really useful for clumsy girls like me when I’m aiming for that darker, dramatic look that my makeup artist friends love to say suits me (it suits me when they do it, when I do it, sadly, not so much) I also first apply the Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion which comes in a pot – it’s 100% smear free, important for a crier! For eyeshadow on nights when I am not rushing out of the door and I can sit down, I use Lancome Eyeshadow Palette in 207 Petal Pusher or Tom Ford Eye Color Quad in Cognac Sable. Both palettes have rich browns, shimmery taupes and a little glitter which I adore,  it’s subtle and blends well for a smokey eye (absolutely the only kind of eye makeup  I semi know how to do). As my mother's daughter, I learned about the importance of eyeliner kohl. No makeup look is complete without an eyeliner. Sometimes, I wear eyeshadow at the base of my lashes for no-makeup makeup look and sometimes, I use both gel and pencil liner to create the perfect winged liner. My favourite eyeliners are Kat Von D Tattoo liner and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil in Perversion. Once you feel confident with felt tip pens and pencils, you can try a gel liner. My all-time favourite gel liner is cheep and cheerful, L'Oreal Infallible Lacquer Liner in 171 Blackest Black.

     CONCEALER/BROWS:

As for concealer, I work best at night and often don’t sleep enough, so let me tell you that my concealer is probably the most important part of my makeup routine. Okay, I am going to be real and tell me, I normally just apply another layer of foundation under my eyes. My favourite foundation to apply as concealer is W3LL People Narcissist Foundation Stick. When I have time to apply both foundation and concealer, I opt for the Makeup Forever Full Cover Concealer. With the makeup forever concealer, the shadows under my eyes totally disappear – it’s so thick and soothing to apply because I know I’ll instantly look so much better. Brows, mine are so sparse, but I like them like that. I don’t do much with my eyebrows, preferring to keep them natural, which is very untrendy now. However, because I suck at plucking/waxing them, sometimes I’ll need to cover up my poor eyebrows and Suqqu Balancing Eyebrow 01 in Moss Green works well for me. Now, I have no idea what I’m doing when I’m applying this, but the result is always one I am happy with.

    LIPSTICK/LIPGLOSS:

My favourite part of makeup, mostly because my lips are one of my favourite parts of my face. It seems my button nose was contrasted with prominent lips, so I like to cover them in all kinds of colours! The 4 lipsticks I use most frequently are all by different brands – you’ve definetely seen me wearing these in my outift posts, especially the plum shades which are the perfect barely there nude for dark skin tones. I don’t really leave the house without it on!

I always wear a lip product before I head out of the door. I guess it's a habit that over time, turned into a basic necessity. Some days, I wear a tinted lip balm and some times, a purple or a red lip. In my makeup bag, I keep lip pencils including MAC Chestnut lip pencil, Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Deauville,  and YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in Nude in Private.

For red lipsticks, my favourites include Maybeline Colour Sensational Matte Lipstick in Rich Ruby, and the Nars Cruella Lip Pencil.

Thank you for reading this post. I hope you got a glimpse into what's in my makeup bag.
